Teaching Hard History (THT) is a powerful podcast series that challenges teachers to go beyond the simplistic and almost-rehearsed narratives that have long been used to describe American history. This episode from March 18, 2022 is a part of the Music Reconstructed sub-series which recurs on the THT channel, which features professional songwriters and musicians in a way that makes music highly relevant, or even central to the historical story being told. This episode touches on the role that Black Cowboys had in the West, who made up one-quarter of cowboys in the era of American Western expansion. The usage of original recordings from very early Black country music artists telling their stories is incredibly riveting in a way that I completely did not expect. This episode and the series generally seems to be an excellent tool to understand the complexities of American history for any Social Studies teacher or anybody who has an interest in these difficult aspects of American history which demands to be confronted and more widely understood.
